Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for students who have a strong foundation in the technical and creative aspects of AV and Lighting. Beyond mastering the “nuts and bolts” of the trade, we value the ability to connect with clients, understand their unique needs, and envision the best solution. Excellence and professionalism are our guiding stars.

Bridging the Gap

We know that the AV and lighting industry is constantly evolving and requires a fundamental, hands-on set of skills that is not always taught in the classroom. That’s where the Field Service Canada’s educational awards come into play.

Although not guaranteed, the Field Service Canada’s educational awards also provide recipients with the potential opportunity to join our team and learn from our experienced and passionate experts. When recent graduates join the FSC team they benefit from in-field training and mentorship from our team of industry experts. This real-world experience helps students transition from their practical college experience into the exciting industry of AV and Lighting.

Ian Barber and Nelson Anselmo, both successful alumni from the Sheridan College Technical Production for Theatre program, have been invaluable members of Field Service Canada for nearly a decade. Infusing our team with their energy and expertise, they have become integral to our success story.

Ian Barber joined Field Service Canada in October of 2021. His journey in the professional live events industry began in 2010 as a stagehand at Canada’s Wonderland. After graduating from Sheridan College’s Technical Production for Theatre and Live Events program, he embarked on a dynamic career path.

Ian’s experience includes working as a backstage technician for Princess Cruise Lines, where he honed his skills. Later, he returned home to contribute as a Lead Live Events Operator and Audio-Visual Systems Drafter. His recent achievement of the CTS certification reflects his commitment to continuous learning and evolution within the industry.

As a Drafting and Documentation Specialist, Ian’s responsibilities encompass:

  • Generating and modifying project-related drawings and documentation.

  • Assisting with project design.

  • Creating end-user manuals and one-sheet operation guides.

  • Supporting the team with any drawing-related tasks.

Nelson Anselmo, with over twenty-five years in the entertainment industry, has been an integral part of numerous projects across Canada. His expertise lies in the integration and installation of live audio production in various venues. Nelson’s skills truly shine when troubleshooting and setting up audio, video, and control systems. Some of his notable projects include:

  • Club Regent Casino Event Centre in Winnipeg, MB

  • Brock University, St. Catharines ON

  • St Catharines Performing Arts Centre, St. Catharines ON

  • Toronto Science Centre Omnimax Theatre, Toronto ON

  • Huron Heights Secondary School, Newmarket ON

Both Ian and Nelson were able to quickly adapt to the niche of the work, bringing their foundational skills, creativity, and enthusiasm to every project. As Martin Vaillant, our Managing Partner, says: “Without people that understand what their clients need, we are missing a very key component.”

We are proud of Ian and Nelson and their achievements to-date, and look forward to supporting more graduates like them in the future.  The FSC Educational Grant is an opportunity where the most deserving students are recognized and rewarded, with recipients being handpicked by program professors.
